Belgian GP 2023 - Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps

Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps

  • No. of Laps: 44
  • No. of Corners: 30
  • Circuit Length: 7.004 km
  • Race Distance: 308.176 km

The actual essence of speed can be experienced in spectacular form on a comparatively safe and modern facility at Spa-Francorchamps, one of the historic race courses adored by drivers and spectators alike. The course has stayed on the F1 calendar for a long time, and with good reason.

The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps is quite challenging for drivers due to its variable altitude. The circuit hosts a full schedule of events outside of Formula 1, including the 24 Hours (now held under the popular GT3 rules), the FIA World Endurance Event for sportscars, a 24 Hour race for motorcycles, as well as competitions in the International GT Open, World Rallycross, and the popular historic Spa Classic.

Grandstand Gold 8: Source Start

Grandstand Gold 8 provides the ideal vantage point from which to watch the start of the race as the cars speed through their brief run into the first bend at the La Source hairpin in Turn 1. You will be able to observe the cars from a front-on angle throughout the race.

What to Expect:

• Clear view of the winning ceremony post-race

• Extremely small distance between you and the pit exit and pit lane

Grandstand Gold 7 ter

Gold 7 Grandstand, which is next to Gold 8, offers views of the La Source hairpin and the straight down the descent to Eau Rouge. You have to see it to believe it when you witness the steep ascent of Eau Rouge. On the departure of La Source, where cars are frequently side-by-side, there are some legendary overtakes.

What to Expect:

• Closer to the track than Gold 8

• Not the best view of the start/finish, with some obstruction in the form of fencing

Grandstand Silver 1: Francorchamps

Sitting in Silver 1 will allow you to see cars accelerate to speeds of up to 300 kph and maintain a flat surface between Raidillon and Eau Rouge. Silver 1 is located on the downhill straight before Eau Rouge. The F1 Fan Zone, which is located directly behind Silver 1, offers a wide selection of food and beverages.

What to Expect:

• Uncovered seating

• Views of cars picking up a lot of speed very quickly

Grandstand Gold 2: GP2

With the addition of a cover to aid with Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps's bad weather, Gold 2 offers comparable views of the straight-downhill descent from La Source into Eau Rouge as Silver 1 does. Like Silver 1, Gold 2 has the F1 Fan Zone with all the conveniences behind it.

What to Expect:

• A huge, panoramic view of the circuit (as long as you're lucky enough to sit in the central section)

• Covered, comfortable seating

Grandstand Silver 2: Spa

Silver 2 is positioned close to the previous two grandstands as we continue to descend the first sector of Spa, while the gradient of the track starts to rise into Eau Rouge. You will undoubtedly be awestruck as you see the F1 and support series vehicles exert every effort to make the best entry and exit into Eau Rouge.

What to Expect:

• Stunning views of the Eau Rouge end of the circuit

• Some unfortunate uncovered seating

Grandstands Gold 3 and 4: Eau Rouge

At the summit of Eau Rouge are the stands Gold 3 and 4. In addition to providing the best view of vehicles approaching Eau Rouge, this location's lofty vantage point also allows you to see Turn 1 and parts of the final Bus Stop chicane at the opposite end of the circuit. There will also be a DJ booth near these stands.

What to Expect:

• Great, clear, and comfortable views of the much-coveted Eau Rouge end

• A breathtakingly thrilling distance from the circuit at Gold 4

Grandstand Les Combes

The Combes grandstand, which is located at the conclusion of the Kemmel straight, provides a view of the side-by-side action. Located just next to the main grandstands at the bends of Les Combes and Malmedy, these seats provide an excellent view of all the thrilling race action.

What to Expect:

• Some intense braking action to enter Turn 5 as the cars check in from a main straight

• Uncovered seating, unfortunately

Grandstands Silver 4: Bruxelles

Situated at the top of Turn 10, you can observe the vehicles as they make their way through the challenging Les Combes chicane and turn into the turn's sweeping downhill corner. With the sun starting to set later and later, you can enjoy an Instagram-friendly perspective of the circuit and the cars from this elevated part of the track.

What to Expect:

• A great photo-op for those wanting to capture the cars in all their speeding glory

• Clear, unobstructed, yet not the most exciting of views

Grandstand Speed Corner

The Speed Corner grandstand, as its name suggests, is located at one of the quickest viewing points on the track. You can get a true sense of the Spa circuit from this grandstand. As drivers compete for the best entry into the fast sector 3 after the speed bend, you will see the vehicles plastered to the track.

What to Expect:

• Bear witness to some tight speeding after cars pass the bend

• Uncovered (and uncomfortable) seating

Grandstand Gold 6: Chicane

The Bus Stop Chicane, the track's last turn, is where Gold 6 is located. This portion of the circuit has seen numerous modifications through the years, and it currently has a strong braking right-hand corner into a tight left-hander into the start/finish straight. It’s a great place for hardcore race fans.

What to Expect:

• Prepare for some overtakes, perfectly-timed brakes, and more technical racing action

• A faceful of the fence if you're in the lower rows

Grandstand Gold 1 and 9: Pit & Pole Position

Golds 1 and 9 provide the best views of the starting grid and the pit lane from their seats along the main straight. You can enjoy watching the teams work on the vehicles and complete pit stops in under three seconds during Free Practice, Qualifying, or the actual race.

What to Expect:

• One of the most elongated views of the circuit - complete with even the podium and the parc ferme

• Great for most of the pit lane action as well

Grandstand 17-27

This grandstand, reserved especially for individuals between the ages of 17 and 27, will provide you with an excellent perspective of the Blanchimont stretch of the track. A DJ booth similar to the ones in grandstands Gold 3 and 4 is playing music in between sessions, adding to the already intense ambiance.

What to Expect:

• All the advantages the General Admission gets you, and more

• An exciting party vibe like nowhere else!

Grandstand Silver 3: Pouhon

The Silver 3 seating option for the Belgian Grand Prix is one of the most popular options for fans looking to get in on the action. The Pouhon grandstand perfectly captures the spirit of Spa-Francorchamps with its views of the circuit's undulations and the magnificent Ardennes woodland serving as a backdrop.

What to Expect:

• The cars navigating a tight curve right beside you

• Unfortunately, quite a distance away from the F1 Village and all the off-track action there

Which Grandstand Should You Go For?

1. For an Awesome View of the First Lap

La Source Grandstands: The La Source Grandstands are great for watching the starting of the Belgian GP because they provide a clear view of the cars as they approach the first turn of the track. Here's where you can get a view of what is arguably the most exciting F1 start!

2. For the Best Overtaking Spot

Gold 6 Grandstand - Chicane: The combination of high speed and a sharp turn at the end of the straightaway provides a prime opportunity for drivers to overtake their opponents. The Gold 6 Grandstand provides an excellent vantage point for spectators to witness this exciting racing action.

3. For a Budget Buy

Speed Corner: This space offers an excellent viewing experience for those on a budget because it is one of the most affordable sections of the circuit. Despite being a cheaper option, the Speed Corner offers great views of fast-paced action as the cars speed by at high speeds, as the name suggests.

Bronze 17-21: The Bronze 17-27 ticket is great for those on a budget because it allows entry into the facility, with access to stands located across the circuit. This will give viewers access to multiple views along the track and get to experience watching a race from various points of view.

4. For the Best View of the Final Stretch

Gold 9 Grandstand: The Gold 9 Grandstand at the Belgian GP is great for watching the finish because it offers a panoramic view of the track and is situated at the final corner, giving spectators an uninterrupted view of the last moments of the race.

5. For a Hair's Breadth Distance from the Track

Gold 4 Grandstand: The Gold 4 Grandstand is a great spot for watching the cars up close because it provides a clear and unobstructed view of the track. This grandstand is strategically located at the end of the Kemmel Straight, which is one of the fastest sections of the Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

6. For the Picture-Perfect Shot

Silver 4 - Bruxelles: The position of the Silver 4 Grandstand makes it such that you get to all angles of the cars passing by as they make their way downhill on the long straight ahead. The position of the grandstand also means that the sun will not be shining directly into the camera lens, making it easier to take clear and bright photos.

The Belgian GP is infamous for having spells of sun, rain, and whatever else you can imagine the weather to bring with itself. While weather predictions for the Belgian GP will be confirmed as the race draws closer, you can expect an overall overcast sky with high chances of rain. If you aren't in a covered grandstand, don't forget to carry umbrellas and raincoats!

Buying merchandise on Friday at the Belgian GP is important because Fridays are usually relatively quieter days of action at the Grand Prix, which means there will be less people and less crowds for those looking to buy merchandise.

There will also be more choice available as Team and Riders shops open earlier in the day and souvenir stands are set up in anticipation of the larger crowds that come through during race weekend.

The race track for the Belgian GP is located in the Ardennes forest, which is known for its unpredictable weather patterns. Sudden rain showers or thunderstorms can occur at any time, which can severely impact your viewing experience if you're not ready and loaded with gear like raincoats, sun protection, and the like.

Purchasing food at the track is known to be notoriously expensive (especially after the introduction of the 'coin' system at the 2022 Belgian GP) and may also result in long lines or limited availability. By bringing your own food, you can save money and avoid the inconvenience of waiting in line or potentially going hungry if food sells out.

Unforgettable Belgian GP Moments

Raikkonen and Hamilton Duking it Out

At some point in the race, the rain started to pour down, making the track slippery and treacherous. In one of the most dramatic moments of the race, Raikkonen tried to pass Hamilton on the Kemmel straight, but the two cars touched, sending Raikkonen spinning off the track. The incident caused controversy, with Hamilton being accused of pushing Raikkonen off the track.

A Legend Discovered

Schumacher's debut at the Belgian GP on August 25, 1991, is considered one of the most memorable moments in Formula One history. Schumacher qualified seventh on the grid, an impressive feat for a rookie driver. However, his race was cut short when his clutch failed on the first lap.

Hakkinen's Memorable Genius

At the 2000 Belgian Grand Prix, Hakkinen pulled off a stunning overtake on Schumacher in the closing stages of the race to secure victory. The two drivers had been battling it out for the lead throughout the race, but it was Hakkinen who ultimately came out on top thanks to a bold move on Schumacher on the final lap.

Russell - A Rising Star

Despite the suboptimal weather conditions at the 2021 Belgian GP, Russell displayed his prowess as a driver. He qualified in second place and maintained his position throughout the race, finishing in the same place. The visibility was poor due to the heavy rain and it was a challenging race for the drivers. However, Russell demonstrated his skillset and put up a great performance, earning him a well-deserved podium finish.

The sprint shootout does not affect the final grid position, as it is a standalone event of the Grand Prix now. In fact, the grid for the final race on Sunday is determined by the qualifying session on Friday.
